The Kirk’s in America

The following is informtion that I have accumulated from Lucien McNeese book “The Kirk and Related Families”, from Max Kirk, from Earline Kirk, my aunt, and other family members who are searching for their ancestors as well.  Other Sources are Rootsweb, Ancestry, Genforum.com, Lancaster County Records, North Hampton, King George, Westmoreland,  and Stafford County Will and Marriage Records.  I will say that next to my cousin, Lucien McNeese and Max Kirk and his wife Sue, have done more research than anyone else that I know of doing research on this family. descendant of

Our Kirk’s were originally Norman and probably were Vikings.  During the reign of William the Conquerer and his son, Henry I and grandson Henry II, many Normans were given land and titles formerly belonging to Englishmen.  Between the reign of Henry I and Henry II, some Normans were given land and titles in Scotland.

Our Norman Kirk’s were probably among these.  The name in France or Normandy was originally spelled Quirke and in Scotland it was spelled O’Couric and another Gaelic spelling was O’Coirce.

According to the  description of the Kirk Coat of Arms , the Kirk’s were of an eccleastical office, with military honors, probably the Crusades, and is a symbol of dominion and authority, granted for success in war.  Also It represents that the bearer was once a member of the knighthood of St. Andrew and the saltire is one of the  eight great ordanies:  the St. Andrews Cross.

Lucien McNeese, who is considered one of the foremost authorities on the family, and is a relative of our grandfather, John Henry Kirk, states that the first Christopher Kirke was born in Scotland in 1612.  However there are other records that I haven’t been able to reconcile yet.

There are some records giving his ancestory as follows:

Christopher Kirke born 02 Feb 1618 Yorkshire, England                            (my record shows 1612 as his birth year)                                               Father:  Christopher Kirk born 17 Nov 1596 Yorkshire, England                 His Father: Thomas Kyrke b 1571 Norton, Derby, England                          His Mother Susan Lister                                                                                  Thomas’ Father:  Edward Kyrke b abt 1545                             His Mother :Ellen Canne                                                                              Edward Father:  Arnold Kyrke b  (maybe abt 1500) Norton, DerbyEngland. His Mother Agnes Thurstan or Thurston                                                      His brother Thurston b  Norton, Derby, England or Greenhill, Derby, England

There is another story about Christopher’s arrival in this county.  Thomas Kyrke, the father of the Christopher born in 1596, was the cousin of a Gervais Kyrke, also born in 1596.  His father was Thurston, the son of Arnold Kyrke and brother to Edward Kirk.

Gervais had five sons with his wife Elizabeth Gowding of Deepe, France.  She was the daughter of John Gowding.  Gervais and Elizabeth lived in Deepe, France for about forty years, where he was know as Jervays His five sons were David, Thomas, Lewis, John and James.  He had two daughters as well, one being Lady Ann Kyrke Hopkins and Lady Elizabeth Kyrke, wife of Joseph Greteulo, a Frenchman from Deepe, France.  They had  three children, David, Elizabeth, and Mary. Both  Anne and Elizabeth Kyrke were Ladies in Waiting for King Charles.  in 1642 during the Civil War in England, Lady Hopkins and her family were sent to stay with David, her brother, in Newfoundland for their protection until the war was over by King Charles. Gervais died on 17 December 1626 t his home in Basing Lane in London. He had lived long enough to see the great sucess his sons had against the French.

In 1628, Gervais Kyrke formed a company of merchants in London consisting of  Sir William Alexander, W. Berkley and others, according to  the book “A Kirk – Berkley Connection” .

David Kyrke proved many times that the French were no match for David and his brothersupon the high seas.  As Max Kirk said, these brothers still had a lot of the vikings in their blood.

In 1628 when war started between England and France over the land in Canada, the five sons of Gervais Kyrke set out from Gravesend, England.  David Kyrke, by now it was Kirke, being the eldest son commanded three ships:

The Abigail—300 tons —Capt. David Kirke

The William—200 Tons —Capt. Lewis Kirke

The George—200 tons—Capt Thomas Kirke.

These brothers were sailing as Privateers in the employment of this group of merchant adventurers.  They sailed with a Letter of Marche from King Charles, authorizing them to board any French or Spanish ship.  He instructed them to harass the French in Canada.

These brothers, five, sailed  into the Canadian coast and not only harassed, but captured and defeated the French there. All five brothers were awarded their Coat of Arms in 1631 for defeating the French fleet under the command of  Admiral M. De Roquemont in 1628.  They captured 18 French Supply Ships and brought Admiral De Roquemont to England as a prisoner of war.

In 1629, the Kirke brothers left England again, this time with David leading an armada of 9 ships under his command.  His brothers, also commanded ships, but among these ships was the 200 ton Gervase.  They captured the French governor of Quebec, Champlain, and took him back to England as a prisioner of war.

The English flag was raised over Canada on 30th day of July, 1629.  David Kirke installed his brother, Lewis, as Governor of Quebec, a position that he held for three years.  After that time King Charles turned it back over to the French.  However, before that took place David Kirke ran the fur trade that had originally been run between the French and the Indians for a period of almost six years.  The Kirk’s had a monopoly on the fur trade, treaty or no treaty.

The fort captured by David Kirke in 1629 is the same fort that exists today in Quebec City,  Quebec.  It sits on a 350 ft cliff, overlooking the St. Lawrence River.   For his part in leading the armada and capturing the French and extablishing the fur trade, David Kirke was made governor of NewFoundland.

Thomas Kyrke at the age of 26 was a Captain of the fleet and a Vice Admiral.   We know that John at 23 and James the youngest also were also captains of their own ships in David’s Armada because these five brothers all five brothers were awarded the addition to their Coat of Arms.

It was from the ship of one of these brothers, that young Christopher Kirke arrived in the New World.  He sailed from Gravesend, England, located east of London on the Thames River the very same place the Kirke brothers started their journey to defeat the French. He sailed on the ship belonging to his father’s cousin, Thomas’s ship the George.  Christopher sailed on 21 August 1635.  The ships captain  or master was Joseph Severne.

The Ships Log showed a Christopher Kirke age 23 and Alice Watson age 30. This would have made Christopher’s birth year 1612 and not 1618.  His wife’s name was Alice.  If he married Alice Watson, could they have been married aboard ship, because so far, it seems, no one has found a marrige recorded for them in North Hampton County, VA  The information above came from John Hottens “List of Emigrants 1600-1700″  and M Tepper’s ” Passengers to America.  Christopher Kirke died before 28 Feb 1652 when the depositions of John Ellis and William Monette were recorded in open Court on 28 Feb 1652.

From the writings of Lucien McNeese, the Kirk Story is the story of the United States, especially in the Southern  states.

He states that the name Kirk means “church” and is of Scottish origin. It was probably given it’s bearer by the name of the village or estate where he lived or the proximity of his home to a church.  It is found in the old English and Irish records in other forms than the ones perviously mentioned.  Some of the were Kirch; Kurk,  and Kerk, Kirke, and Kirk as we know it today.  Families with this name usually went from Scotland to England and Ireland.  They were frequently from Nottingham, Derby, Essex, and York.  For the most part, they were yeoman of landed gentry of Great Britain.  Our ancestors married into prominent families in both Great Britain and the Colonies.  Many of their marriages and births are recorded in the parrish of Christ Church, in Westover County, VA, in Lancaster County, VA, and in Stafford County, VA.  then they began to move southward and westward.

This ancestor, Christopher Kirke. who traveled from Gravesend was probably born in Scotland, though his family is listed in Yorkshire and Derby, England.  The place he settled in North Hampton was mostly wilderness inhabited by Indians and a few white settlers.  The first years the settlers went through suffering and hardships.  There were several more Kirk’s living in Virginia.  Some may have been related , perhaps his brothers.

Chirstopher and Alice (Watson) Kirke had (1)  Christopher Kirk, Jr. (2) Mary Kirk (3) Rebecca.  So far I have no records  of  a marriage for Mary or Rebecca

Christopher Kirke, Jr.  b between 1636 and 1640 married Anne?  between 1662-1665 It is possible she was a Gibson  because Christopher bought his first land from between 1665 and 1670 fron a John Gibson in North Umberland County where Anne was born.  He died in lancaster County in 1705 leaving his wife and 5 children.  (1)  James Kirk (2) Christopher Kirk III (3) Thomas Kirk (4) Robert Kirk (5) Ann Kirk

Christopher Kirke III m Ann??  No birth  or marriage date given  died before 10 Oct 1722 Lancaster County, VA .

(3) Thomas Kirk (4) John Kirk (Alice Kirk) (5) Rebecca Kirk. Capt Hugh Brent was appointed Guardian of Thomas.  Because there was only one child with a guardian who was not the mother may mean he was the youngest child. Thomas  seems not to have married and died about the same time as his mother.  His Will was probated 22 Feb 1778 and left everything to his brother and his children and his mother, who died a month Later.  (Max Kirk wonders if Thomas may have died in the Revolutionary War)

Thomas Kirk, son of Christopher Kirk, Jr., married Sarah?? died before        12 May 1727.  Will mentioned seven children, only Thomas and John are named, but the son Thomas was named guardian of his brother, James orphans, and Sarah was mentioned as their grandmother.  All in Lancaster County, VA.  Ref Will Book 12 Page 10 and Lucien MeNeese Book on Kirk Family.

Ann Kirk, daughter of Christopher Kirk, married William Nash of lancaster County, VA on 10 Feb 1717.  Her family  with William Nash is listed in Roots Web and in Family Pages in Genalogy.com.

Robert Kirk, son of Christopher Kirk, Jr., who is my ancestor, married  was born about 1670 in Lancaster County, VA and his will is dated 03 Mar 1727.  He married  Margaret??

Children were: (1) George Kirk (2) Sarah Kirk (3) Jeremiah Kirk (4) Hezekiah Kirk (5) Charity Kirk (James Kirk).  As far as I can tell George never married, but in Robert’s  will, he requested that in the case of the death of his wife, that George was to raise his daughter Charity and his youngest son James.  Hezekiah mus have still been young as well, because George was to hold their part of his estate until they reached eighteen years of age.  He stated that he can hold the opart of the estate belonging to his daughter until she reaches  eighteen years of age or until her marriage and his two sons likewise until they reach eighteen years of age. All of the children must have been born somewhere between 1700 and shortly before 1727 because the three youngest children were under eighteen years of age.

Max Kirk posted on Genforum to a Ben Kirk that he thought that James Kirk in Augusta County, VA was the son of Jeremiah, Kirk, Jr. This Jermiah Kirk, Jr of Lancaster County was born in 1760.  His father, Jeremiah married in 1740 and had a son James, who was the father of Elizabeth, Jeremiah Kirk’s granddaughter.  It is my contention that this James Kirk was the son of Robert Kirk.  If this is so, then James wife was Agnes Butler and the daughter of jeremiah, Charity was married to James Bratton.  The dates don’t fit for a child of either Jeremiah because I have the dates and children of both Jeremiah’s.  Anne Butler’s father was James Butler bedause he mentions the children of james and Agnes,  james Kirk and Anne Kirk as his grandchildren.

Lucien McNeese mentions no  marriages and descendants of any of Robert;s children except Jeremiah who married Anne Thomas, daughter of John Thomas b in 1760 and died in 1782.  Mr.  NcNeese in writing of the family of  Anne Thomas the wife of Jeremiah Kirk, that The Kirks, Monroes, and Jones intermarried in King George, Stafford County, VA  and in Westmoreland County and that they were all neighbors.

Jeremiah married Anne Thomas of Culpper County, VA about 1840 in King Georg county, Va.  He didn’t serve in the Revolutionary War,  Insteadd he furnished Property, Horse, and other aid to the revolutionary Cause which was satisfactory to the Court on  04 Ap 1782 in King George County, VA.

Taken from Tyler’s Qrtly Hisorical magazine Vol V-1923-44 Page 55

In his will dated 5 July, 1792, Will Book 2 page 149 he mentions, he mentions four children, Jeremiah Kirk, Jr, Sarah Kirk Baltrap, Hezekiah Kirk , who married Bethlehem Bennet,(who was related to the Jones and Monroes, ) and  jesse Kirk  The father of grandaughter Elizabeth Kirk was a son, James Kirk and another son William Kirk married  Elisabeth Agnes Cain and moved to Fairfax County, VA.  The grandchild Mary Jones mentioned could have been a grown grandchild and daughter of one of the Kirk sons or a daughter who married a Mr. Jones.  Jesse Kirk moved on to Adair County, Missouri and was the oldest resident of Kirksville, Missouri.  He opened the first Tavern and business in Kirsville.  He was Postmaster and the Town of Kirksville, was named for him.   None of the children’s history is mentioned except for Jeremiah Kirk, Jr.  Jeremiah Kirk, jr. b abt 1760 d 18169 in Stafford County, VAmarried Anne Monroe 18 Aug 1785 in St PaulC hurch, King George and Stafford Counties Recorded on Page 225 of the Church Records.  Anne Monroe was the daughter of George Monroe and was born in 1760 in Westmoreland County, Va.  She was the second cousin to President James Monroe and oftern carried her children to the White House, when he was President.

The 1810 Census mentions eight children and one male over 45 in the household.  No mention  is made of the mother, Anne.  She may have died by this time.  The three oldest children were girls between ages of 16-26.  The youngest were three boys under 5 yrs of age.  The children of Jeremiah Kirk, Jr. and Ann Monroe were as follows:  All were born in Stafford County.  The children of Jeremiah Kirk, Jr., and Ann Monroe are as follows: (1) Mary Kirk b 1787 (2) Margaret Kirk b 1790 (3) Sarah Kirk b 1792 (4) Elizabeth Kirk b between 1794-1796 (5) George Kirk b between 1798-1800 (5) William Kirk b 25 Sept 1802 (7) John b between 1803 and 1805 and (8) Benjamin b between 1816-1807.

I  am the great great grandaughter of Jeremiah’s son,  William Kirk born in 1802 and married to Rebecca Billingsley, but that will be the story for another posting.

    Hi,

I live in the Northern Ireland and my family of Kirks come from Inver, County Donegal. We descend from a Daniel Kirk, who, I think, came from Perthshire in the 18c.. “Daniel” is a common name in our family. I believe that many Donegal Kirk’s emigrated to the USA. One of these USA Kirks, Daniel Kirk, has drawn up a family tree. You may already have contact with him, if not, please let me know.

Incidentally, a “celtic” gene was discovered a while ago (actually a gene allele specific to N Ireland and Scotland). I “googled” it and and a list of US people with the gene appeared, including a Kirk (with family origin Inver, Co Donegal) – who turned out to be Michael Kirk, Daniel’s brother.

    Regards,

    Michael

ps. By the way, Tony Blair’s (our previous Prime Minister) mother’s name was Corscadden – and she came from Inver too. Daniel’s family tree showed that the Corscaddens were related to the Kirks by marriage (both families being Methodist – my mother says that Charles Wesley used to stay with our family when he was in Ireland). With an Irish mother, Tony Blair may well have an Irish passport as well as a British one.

Hi Michael, I am a great-granddaughter of a Jane Kirk, father George Kirk from Mountcharles main street, I am trying to draw up my family tree and I am wondering if you would be able to help me. Jane had two brothers Hugh and John who I cannot find at all but I know that they were in Belfast around 1900. I would also be interested in the family tree you say a Daniel Kirk has as I have bits of information and I would like to establish if my great-great-grandfather George Kirk links in with your kirks and Daniel’s kirks. I am in Letterkenny so I have been over to Inver, Mountcharles, Donegal town, Frosses and Dunkineely looking at headstones trying to find out more!

My name is Dan Kirk (Daniel Winton Kirk} and have a genealogy on ancestry.com. The tree name is “200909DanielKirk1733Ireland” I cannot connect to the Kirks in this document. They must have come to Ameica much earlier. My Kirks, Baskins and Cuscadens came from Donegal County Ireland about 1820 to Hemmingford, Quebec, Canada and then about 1850 to Wisconsin.

I’m sure I’ve got where George Kirk fits into the Kirk family tree. I’ll have to dig it out for you as it’s been some time since I looked at it.

        Hi Emma,

My mother has just told me that George Kirk was her grandfather’s (Thomas) brother. The brothers were Thomas, Daniel, James, William and George. You’ll see Thomas’ headstone on the old Inver graveyard site (and the picture – it’s the big pointed one with a white bit by itself beside the church).

        Hi Emma,

Maybe in 1901, at 55 yo George Kirk was already widowed and his kids, Jane, Hugh and John, had left home and he was living with/looking after his uncle Alexander.

My mother has a press cutting with pictures “Historic building demolished in centre of Mountcharles” written by Eamonn Monaghan. It says that the first George Kirk registered the three storey building in 1768 – it was a hotel and held weddings. “Kirks was a grocery shop, a bakery and a bar”. It became known as McGlinchey’s – he was an apprentice who came from Castlederg in the 1890’s and eventually bought it off George Kirk – “the last of the Kirks” the article says.

So maybe the deal was that George could stay with the McGlinchey’s in the house, as per the 1911 census. So was this the house that George was living in with his uncle Alexander Work in 1901?

      Good Day,

My name is Tammy Bell and I am researching my family history. I have traced back to a Stephen Kirk born in Ireland in 1740. He came to america in 1762. I believe he landed in pennsylvania. He was married twice. First wife was Anna ?, 2nd Wife was Susanah ?. If you have any information about this Kirk line please contact me at the above the address. I would appreciate any help with this I can get.

      Thank you

Tammy, Stephen Kirk is not in my line. Check out Max Kirk’s postings on Genforum.com. He has quite a bit of History on that line I believe. He also mentions a Joseph Kirk. If it is the correct Stephen, I believe he went to North Carolina. There is also A stephen Kirk who married an Earnhardt in Rowan County, NC. If you check out my blog again there is a Michael Kirk fro Ireland , who mad a comment. Check that as well. Sorry I don’t have the information handy. If you don’t get any results from either of these sources, let me know an I’ll look in all my Kirk Data. I have tubs of info on Kirk Families in America and I do have somewhere the info on Stephen and Joseph, but the quickest way would be to go to Genforum.com and check out the Kirk postings, expecially Max Kirk’s.

Re: your information that “another son William Kirk married Elisabeth Agnes Cain and moved to Fairfax County, VA. The grandchild Mary Jones mentioned could have been a grown grandchild and daughter of one of the Kirk sons or a daughter who married a Mr. Jones.”

The information I have is that William Kirk, son of Jeremiah Kirk and Ann Thomas Kirk, married Francis Mitchell, 17 June 1788, granddaughter of Charity Jenkins who may have been Charity Kirk. In 1803, Ann Kirk, William Kirk and his wife Fanny conveyed to John Suttles land that originally had belonged to Jeremiah Kirk. William and Frances Kirk moved to Sumner County, TN. The land they purchased was inherited by Hezekiah Kirk, Robert Kirk, and Benjamin Kirk, among others. Benjamine Kirk married Virinda Jones, daughter of Edmund and Mary Jones, but I do not know if it’s the same Mary Jones. There are other wills and deeds connecting William Kirk, Frances Mitchell Kirk, Ann Kirk and Jeremiah Kirk.

I am the 4th great granddaughter of William and Frances Kirk.

I’m interested in this Stephen Kirk in North Carolina. Also, Joseph, George (on Granville Co 1755 Tax list) Here’s my interested, as it relates to the Kirk Family of Westmoreland Co, Va. maybe. First I believe my Duncan ancestors were from Westmoreland Co, Va. (Peter Duncan b.c. 1633).My ancestor was living on Smith’s Creek, Bute Co, NC. Next door on Cabbin Creek was a Peter Duncan, and not far away and near Stonehouse Creek was a Blanchflower Duncan Sr, proven son of Henry, son of Peter. Of course Peter Duncan had a son Charles who had son Henry who married Charity Mitchell, and she had dt Francis who married William Kirk.
So, where was George Kirk Living in Granville Co (Bute cut from Granville in 1764) ….Looks like Stonehouse Creek…
DB-A, page 14 THOS. HOUSE, of Granville Co., to DANIEL SLEDGE, of Brunswick Co., Va. 16 Jan. 1764. 300 Pds. Va. money for 430 A. in Granville Co., on Stonehouse Creek, adj. GEO KIRK, JOS. Reg: (no date), SUGAN JOHNSON, P.R.

There is also another Westmoreland marriage record interesting to me and it’s for a James Kirk & Francis Balthrop, married before 27 April 1767. She is said to be dt of a John Balthrop who died in Westmoreland in 1762, however she is not mentioned in his Will….So, is there a link here to Bute Co, NC too (this area is Warren Co, NC by this time, as Bute was dissolved in 1779). This must be a pretty old John Kirk?

      13. 10 Aug.1779; Aug. Ct.1779. Est. JOHN KIRK, dec’d. WILLIAM BALTHROP, Admr. Bond for 1,000 Pds. to Gov. RICHARD CASWELL. Sec: JOHN TODD

Now to Stephen Kirk – Looks like he was involved in deed on “Smith’s Creek” too

1777 Feb. 7, Bute Co, NC – Stephen Kirk witnessed and proved deed dated 7 Feb. 1777, William Fox et al of Bute and Brunswick Counties to Edward David, 100 ac. In Bute..Smith’s Creek ..Little Ready Branch to County Line. Aug. Ct 1777

1777 Feb. 17 Bute Co, NC Deed Book 6 p 165 – William Hancel to John King Rosser and Stephen Kirk of Bute Co, NC, to secure deed, forthy pounds Va. Money, mortage on 120 ac. On Little Ready Creek Branch May Ct. 1777

Little Ready Creek & Smith’s Creek just happens to be where my Duncan ancestor were living, but other Westmoreland Co, Va. Property owner in area too = Thomas Thornton, George Lamkin (married Hannah Smith), The George Cox, Ellinor Lamkin family, including John Rust. Living nearby on Hawtree Creek are James Harwick, Aron Hardwick, James Walker, Hardige Walker all connecting to the Thomas Walker family of Westmoreland. Other names in immediate area are Job Self & Willoughby Self (out of Robert Self family of Westmoreland and Thomas Wheeler married Midred, son of William Wheeler out of upper end of Westmoreland.

I’m not a Kirk researcher, but looks to me like a good chance these Kirks have Westmoreland routes. (Ps: I have plotted the above families on a map and they are very close.)

Actually, it’s Lucien L.McNees, not McNeese. As I write this, I have my copy of “Kirk Families and Related Families” on my desk. I’m of the Winston County, MS Kirks and you can find me on pg 66 of the 1957 edition (my father was Dr Warren Matas Kirk and my grandfather was Chalmers Anderson Kirk).

I agree on the discrepency in Christopher Kirke’s birthplace – the Mississippi Kirks have the oral story that he was a Scot, but about 10 or 15 years ago, I had an online friend (who was also a Kirk from the Ohio/Illinois branch of the family) who told me that his family had the story that Christopher was from England.

Debbie Allen, what the Kirk book says about your grandmother is that she was born 2 Oct 1905, married Richard Parks (b. 2 Feb 1901) of Noxapater and died on 1Jan 1944, and that she had 6 children. My great-great grandfather was Clement Thomas Kirk also, so we’re close cousins!

I’m currently on geni.com and working up a Kirk Family Tree from the bottom up. I also have a GEDCOM file starting with Christopher Kirke going down the direct line to me (it also includes what the Kirk book has about the Monroe family and our connection). I can be contacted at Jim Kirk 2 at gmail dot com (remove all spaces).

Glad I found this spot and even gladder to met some cousins!

I am not convinced that the William Kirk who married Elizabeth Cain is the same William Kirk who was the son of Jeremiah .Due to the information above that this William Kirk married Frances Mitchell.records seem to verify this .It is pretty much proven that the William Kirk who married Agnes Cain is the son of Thomas Kirk and possibly Margot Duncan. So the above information listing him as the son of Jeremiah is wrong.Still looking for Thomas Kirks parents he is the father of the William Kirk who married Agnes CAin.

The William Kirk who is the son of Jeremiah Kirk is my great great grandfather. I have his history and know this for a facet. The William Kirk who married Agenses Cain is not. Where this information came from I don’t know. The William Kirk who was Jeremiah Kirk II and Anne Monroe mareeid Rebecca Billingsly, the daughter of Clement Billingsley and Cynthia Rebecca Turner. He was born in Lancaster County, Virginia. You might check Max Kirk’s postings in Genforum.com for William and Agnes Cain. He and his wife Sue have the William, who married Agnes, and their lineage. Sue also wne to Lancaster County as did did my cousin, Lucien McNees, and researched all those old records. Many of them can also be found in Ancestory.com. I know my families lineage back to Arnold Kiyrke and had berified it and had it verified, so I know of which I speak. I don’t have any connection the William and Agnes. kathy Davsi (Bambudder)

Doing a bit of research myself I came across a comment posted by my sister Debbie Allen. I now live in Northern VA are are attempting to search so of the court records in the Northern Neck/Eastern Shore region. Our Aunt Kathleen Hemphill has a copy of “Kirks and related familes”. I think it was written in the 50s.

Stan, I think that I am kin to most of the families from Winston County. Which Hemphill is your aunt married to. Oneof my Haggard lines married a Hemphill. I sent Debbie quite a bit of information. Then we had several deaths in the family and we are out of town quite a bit, but I take my computer with me. I have several sources from Winston County and visit often. The last time I contacted Debbie, I was supposed to send her some Triplett info. I will be back in Athens next week and I can let you know what that was if you need any info. Tell Debbiem I said Hello.

Melanie, The Family History Center doesn’t circulate the book, but it is on film. My daughter got my copy and hasn’t retuned it, so I ordered the film from Salt
Lake and made a copy for myself. It is out of Print.
If you have a University where you live, somtimes they have it in the Genalogy Section. KI’ll look the film number up and get it to you. You can copy it for your own use, but it is about a quarter a page and there are 110 pages.

looking at the odd record for Thomas Kirk who is found in orange co va.in 1666 he buys land from a Coghill on cockleshell creek .Odd thing is he apparently has at least two daughters Mary who married a Willis and lived in the area of northumberland she has a sister Elizabeth who married a biddlecomb. These Willis connect to the Christopher Kirk family also ,can anyone tell me who this Thomas is ? the Randolph Kirk family also shares some records with the Willis family

      • Pat Perkins said,

I am actually responding to my own post ,I believe that the Thomas who lived near Coghill on Cockelshell creek was the Kirk who left a widow named Elizabeth, she wrote her will in 1676 and it was submitted in 1682 she also mentions daughters Mary and Elizabeht ,also a son John who is not 18 at the time this will was written.I believe that this son John is the one who married Frances and had sons Joseph, I believe they also had but no proof sons John,Thomas,William and maybe a james. They had a daughter Elizabeth who married George roberts.

Angela, check with either lds.org or Family search. They are digatizing the records and right now they are storing them on Ancestory.com. I have found quite a few legal documents that are available there. You might e-mail Max and ask him if his wife, Sue, collected any of those documents becasue he told me that she had done most of the research. The Us Census records also verify the relationship. I served for 8 years as director of the Family History Center in Athens, GA and
found the easiest was to order the films for those areas where they lived. The church has copied all the legal documents for every country in the world that would give them permission. The films only cost $3.50 per roll and are kept in the Family Hisory Center for individuals to use for a period of 30 days. Is there one near you? Everyone working there will be glad to help you in doing that if you haven’t tried it. I’ve gotten Family Histories, Wills, Marriage Licenses, Land records, etc. You can usually call local libraries with genalogy sections or write to the State Archives, give them the names and localities taht you are looking for and for a small fee they will copy them and send them to you. I found at the Archives in Atlanta and Montgomery, AL, have films from Salt Lake that were given to them for each county for allowing them to copy rrecords stored there. If you know what counties, they will also copy them for a small fee. Once again I will look and see what I have on the family. My husand has had some immediate health problems that I’ve been dealing with, so I ahven’t had time to look. But I will and get back to you.

I am looking for the father of Randolph Kirk (born about 1620) He first appears in Westmoreland County, Virginia Sept. 16, 1651 when he patented land.

“Randolph Kirk, patented 1,000 acres south of the present Neenah, and east of Nomini Grove, part joined by Thomas Beale, and was several times repatented and corrected. Beale and Kirk patent dated September 25, 1664. Beale died, or transferred his interest, for Randolph Kirk patented in his own right 1,000 acres, March 22, 1665. The out-boundaries are rather vague. The widow of Randolph Kirk (Sarah) was allowed 678 pounds of tobacco for carrying messages during Bacon’s rebellion, the account being allowed November 10, 1682.” .. “254 acres Randall Kirk Sept 16, 1651, Randall Kirk patented 254 acres of land between the two branches of Currioman Creek.” Source: Historical Atlas of Westmoreland County Virginia Patents by David W. Eaton

Sarah was married twice prior to Randolph Kirke and once after Randolph Kirk. “Hindmasse, Thomas (or Hindmast) & Burt, (Sarah) (wid.); before 25 Jul 1677; bride was the rel.of Jn. Burt; she mar. (3) Randal Kirk & (4) Nicholas Silvester: (WC OB 1675/6-1688/9″79)” Page 180 .. Kirk, Randolph (or Randall) & Hindmasse, Sarah (Wid.) bef. 16 May 1677; Randolph Kirk had been prev. mar. to Amy (lnu) who must have died after 30 Jun 1675; bride was the wid. of (1) Burt and (2) Thomas Hindmasse; she married (4) Nicholas Silvester; (WC OB 1675/6-1688/9;65.87)” page 229 Source: Married Well and Often Marriages of the Northern Neck of Virginia 1649-1800 by Robert K. Headley, Jr.

Randolph Kirk (born about 1620) was the father of Henry Kirk.
Henry was the father of Edward Kirk.
Edward was the father of Jamimah Kirk (she married William Kendall Stafford County Virginia around 1740)

This is odd I am not real used to this site, but my email had a question re Stephen Kirk, and a comment to click on the site for responses ,all I find when I do this is the responses , that are written as above not the original question. That appeared in my email, I am not sure if we are talking about the same Stephen whos father was Joseph Kirk of Culpeper Co Va.,and Chatham co NC,if we are he was not from Ireland,at least most likely he was from Culpeper Co Va .Joseph Kirk was born probably in Culpeper or westmoreland,Co Va.He was the son of A John and Frances, I believe she was Frances Mason. This John and Frances lived in Fauquier and just on the Culpeper co line , When John died in 1730.his will from Stafford Co va. mentions wife Frances ,and Children, when Frances married again to a Wm Clift ,She had Joseph oldest son of hers and Johns sign so she could sell John Kirks land to George Roberts ,who had married I believe to an Elizabeth also a daughter of the John and Frances . I descend from Thomas Kirk who reportedly married Margot Duncan.I believe that this Thomas and a John that (married Margaret Brooks)were brothers of Joseph. They seem to all be in the same places .and the ages were right.I believe that this John who married Frances descends not from the Christopher Kirk line, but more likely the Randolph Kirk line,This is due to the fact that Randolph must have been born about the same time as Christopher 1 and we know that Randolph had at least a son Henry ,etc. This family also appears in Stafford Co .This Randolph from early on is also associated with the Duncan family .selling land to Peter Duncan back in the middle 1600’s These two families are always together. There are other familial names that tie them together I do not know how exactly ,they connect, I need other researchers to help figure it out ,but I do believe that the John and Frances of Culpeper ,Fauquier ,and stafford Co are connected to Randolph Kirk family. I believe that they also connect to the Thomas who is found buying land or selling to the Coghills in Essex in 1664 are tied to this family of Randolph also . Perhaps another son of Randolphs.I suspect that John who married Frances Mason is the son of an Elizabeth who is found in Rappahannock in 1687,she again giong by memory left a will in which she left a John Underage and an Elizabeth and Mary (going by memory).I welcome any evidence either supporting or contradicting my theories .

They may have moved to Anderson Co. by 1830 census but a guess on my part.
A certain John Kirk born 1820 in Tenn. and in Williamson Co. Illinois by 1855, claims his parents as Thomas Kirk and Peggy Lipsey camefrom Georgia.
There is a Thomas Kirk mentioned in 1805 land lottery of Georgia along with about six other Kirks, including John Sr. and Jr.; Stephen Kirk; James Kirk; Henry Kirk; Jessee Kirk.
Have found little to prove any connections to Thomas Kirk and need suggestions.

Greetings, Can someone please let me know where I might find proof that William Kirk, b. 1802 is the son of Jeremiah Kirk and Ann Monroe. Did Jeremiah Kirk have a will that names his children? Thank you. Valerie Turner

I’m looking for Bridgett Kirke born about 1630, who was transported into Northumberland, VA, listed on a 1650 document, claimed by Gervais Dodson. Does anyone of the Kirk researchers have knowledge of this woman? She appears to be a sister to Henry Kirke and Randolph Kirke in the Westmoreland, VA area in the timeframe of 1670.

This contact is in reference to the Thomas Keene family out of Suffolk county, Eng, where there are plenty of Kyrke family listed in the Bury St Edmonds records out of Thornedon, Wortham and Bacton from 1500-1650. Thomas Keene came from Suffolk area into St Mary’s, Maryland/ Kent Island, VA around 1635, eventually settling in Northumberland, VA about 1645. I’ve been studying these Kirke connections for a few years, but still haven’t found any signs of Bridgett being claimed by Kirkes. Anyone know of her? Cynthia Couch Rodriguez

Cynthia, I have two suggestions for you. Contact Max Kirk on Genforum.com. They have done extensive research on the Kirk line and he has some queries on the Randolph Kirk you mentioned. The other, if you haven’t checked is Ancestry.com. I also searched in England, in the area that my Kyrke’s came from. I suggest you try keying in the Area they came from in England. You might also check ships records for that time period. I will have to look for them, but I have somewhere in these comments a ships records for that period. I found out Christopher Kirke’s wife’s name listed on the same shiop that he came in on. I’ll try to find it for you and let you know the autahor of the books for these shops records.

Kathlyn, my twin sister and I have been studying this Kirke connection for about 3 years, and intensively for the last one year. We know Bridgett Kirke is in the Northumberland, VA area about 1645, then into Westmoreland and her connections in the same area as Randolph and the older Henry Kirke are suggestive of a family connection. I’ve studied the early records beginning about 1629 in the Newfoundland area, describing the stronghold the Kirkes held, and the business partners from Gravesend, England. In my observations, I came to the conclusion that Christopher Kirke who died in 1652 was married to an Alice (not Watson, unless there are two Alice Watson’s), perhaps a Truett, sister of George Truett. In the ship’s records for Elizabeth, Aug 1st, 1635, bound for VA, is George Trevett, from Kent, who sailed from Gravesend, age 18. George Truett appears to marry Frances Graves who died in 1645, orphant of Capt Thomas Graves and stepdau of Henry Pennington, then secondly George Truett married to Alice Watson and they are still living together around 1670. As you probably know, George Truett has a son Henry, who is gifted a cow by Alice Kirke and her husband, Christopher Kirke, approves the gift on June 30, 1652. Then later that year, as my understanding is that Jan and Feb are at the end of the calendar year in these records, Christopher Kirke is dead by Feb 8th, 1652/3. We’ve been wondering if Alice Kirke has another marriage? We suspect it could have been to Abraham Fields who first married an Alice about 1658. This is strangely possible when you see where Alice Field’s son, John Fields b about 1666, grows up and has land in a deed with Henry Truett on the 20 April, 1687, in Henrico Co, VA, next to Thomas Field’s corner. If the scenario above plays out, John Fields and Henry Truett would have been first cousins. More connections to follow. Thanks, Cynthia

Cynthia, I tried sending you a message earlier and don’t know what happened to it. However, I have been doing some additional resedarch on Christoper Kirke, Alice and George Truett.

I have been doing this research for some 30 years and have formed some opinions that I don’t actually have proof of. However there are some extenuating facts I have found.

First: The first actual document that I found before I posted my blog and added any information about this was going back through my cousin, Lucius McNees’s book, “Kirk Family and Related Families”. Then I went looking for Ships Passengers Lists. I found both Chrirtopher Kirke and Alice Watson. This Alice came here in 1635. After looking further, I found that George Truett came over in 1640 and was sponsored by Christopher Kirk. This was about the same time that Christopher’s son, Chrrstopher was born. Then I found that George married to Frances Graves and some believe it may ahve been Frances Pendleton, but every source I found seems to indicate that she was Thomas Grave’s daughter. I found that she was ill and died leaving a will or some document, perhaps a deed where land had been sold while she was gravely ill and that Henry Pennington had been her guardian or attorney and that she had a sister named Ann.

Second: If George didn’t come here until 1640, Christopher was already married to Alice. Then George married or had been married to Frances and Christopher and Alice probably stood as god parents to George’s son. This was done in June of 1652 and recorded in July of 1652 with Christopher’s consent. Then there is also a document dated Feb 1552 that George had sexual relations with his wife, Alice, before they were married. So I can’t believe it was the Alice Watson married to Christopher nor Alice Truett.

AFter so many years of reading and research, it has been my experience that usually women didn’t come to America by themselves, unless there was a very good reason and usually with a servant if she was a lady. And I have found no record so far of there having been a Alice Truett, but I did find the Alice Watson coming. I have also seen records mentioaing an Alice Wilson. Frances died in 1644 or 1645. The Alice Wilson that I mentioned is supposed to have been the widow of Henry Wilson and purchased a Calf from Frances in Dec 1638. Then a reference was made that this Widow Wilson was the 2nd wife of George Truett and that she slept with him before they were married. They had to appear in court on 28 July 1652 and both they and witnesses to their adultery were punished. This Alice was a Quaker. She was also required to attend a Church Court.

I have a ton of paper and many documents regarding these families, but no proof that Christopher was married to Alice Truett. So until I find proof of that I’ll leave Alice Watson as his wife. It is possible she married George in 1652, but she would have been a new widow and getting a little bit old to have a family. The Alice Watson I found with Christoper was born in 1609 and was a litle older than Christopher. So I’ll keep looking. The day will come when we all will know about all of this history, what with technology progressing, unless the old documents get so fragile they can’t be handled.

        Kathlyn K. Davis (Bambudder)

        P. S. I did find a record about Bridget

William, you and I have had a discussion about the Kirk’s and decided our lines weren’t connected. However, I know that Max Kirk also has the 1618 date for Christopher Kirke, but I found Christopher in one of Michael Tepper’s Ships Passenger Lists The date 1612 was there as well as in my cousin, Lucien McNees’ book. He researched this line for 20 years and documented every source and person he spoke with or contacted.
Since his father was born in 1596, 1618 may very well be the correct date of his birth. If the date Christopher was born was 1618, he would have only been 17 years old when he arrived in 1635. I have spent many hours in the last few weeks looking at and through Whitehaugh and Derbyshire records. I haven’t yet seen his birth record. I have also searched many, many records, in the U.S. colonies looking at dates and the 1618 date wouldn’t work with some of the dates I found. If you would like to send me some information on Christopher, I would be tickled to have it. You have my e-mail address. However, I will tell you as I told Cynthia, I will stick with the 1612 date until I see for my own eyes in a church birth record that Christopher’s birthdate was in 1618. Thanks for all the work you do on your line and as soon as I get my families’ taxes filed, I will copy the McNees book for you and Glenn. However I will need mailing addresses and will contact you both at that time. By the way, It’s Kathlyn not Kathrine. Thanks again. Wouldn’t i be wonderful if everyone knew as much about their roots. After going through all the old Pedigree charts again, it struck me that we are all related to Father Adam and that after 5 generations we are very probavbly related to everyone.

        Thanks for all your interest.

My email is LeslieKirk@live.com please contact me. I have my line proven to Stephen Kirk and had my father do the Family Tree DNA project recently. The test confirmed matches with others from the Stephen Kirk line. I see from the posts some people are and are not related to this Stephen. However, if the book mentioned above is related I am interested. I would like to take this line further and it appears there are some of this site are researching the same line. I am happy to share my info and pay for copies from other Kirk researchers. Thank you, Leslie Kirk (lesliekirk@Live.com)

It does look as if Bridgett was unmarried in the transport listing in 1650, but we suspect it was more likely about 1645 or so. A few years later James Kirke appears, but there aren’t records that follow him far in Northumberland. It is possible, she married one of the many Kirke sons or grandsons of Gervais. But we feel that she comes from Gervais’ cousin, Thomas Kirke in James Citie, VA area. She is connected to many of the Westmoreland, VA families. We’ll see how the data starts to unfold and continue our search. Thanks so much. Cynthia

In a previous post I noticed mention of Gerviss family and also Abraham Field family in same write-up.. I’m a Duncan researcher and interested in who the Robert Duncan was that witnessed the Will of Daniel Field Sr.. Peter Duncan (b.c. 1633) purchased land from Randolph Kirk. A Robert Duncan witnessed Will of Daniel Field Sr, son of Abraham Field. A Daniel Field Jr appear to have married a Mary Gerviss ( I think a widow) who had daughter Margaret Gerviss..Daniel Field Sr. Will dated 1720, so below is Daniel Field JR Will

Kathlyn, I’ll take a look for Max Kirk’s research on Genforum, thanks. I’ll also look at the Kirke wills coming out of the UK National Archives. I love that a will is less than 5 bucks and I can check it out for 28 days and get it within a minute. It’s a great way to double check family in the late 1500s and early 1600s. This Bridgett Kirke is from a prominent family and marries well. I’ll check a few more options and see if we can help her become found. Thanks so much for letting me join into your pages.

I am most excited now about the William Kirk who lived in Fauquier co va he is reported to have been a pirate and believed to have hidden loot on his farm.He lived on Snow hill farm about a mile south of New Baltimore .I believe that this is the same William Kirk who died without children whos estate eventually went to David McNish, through his mother Mary Mcioar daughter of a Sarah Kirk and John Mc Ioar,William Kirk wrote his will 1779,he said in this will if he should die with out children ,he died the next year,so is doubtful he left any children ,a Sarah Kirk eventually recieved half of his estate ,with her grandson David McNish being eventually getting the estate as her only remaining heir ,he also left half of his personal estate to his wife Elizabeth and apparently the remains to the children of Sarah Kirk the McIoars now living in Scotland .,wonder if somehow these folks did not recieve their share as they lived in scotland .I also find a couple of records in 1734 with both a william Kirk and william Clift .I am trying to figure out if the William Kirk who died in Fauquier was a son of john and Francis Kirk.or connected to Randolph Kirks family .Is anyone looking at this interesting man ??

Nancy, give me a little info and I’ll see if I can help. One of the things you might be interested in (and I know about these records becasue I’ve searched then) is the Family Group Records collection ath the LDS Family History Center. They ranged in dates from 1924 through the Center and tnhey will help you find them, They are reels and reels of Family Group Seets sent to the Center in Salt Lake. I ordered one on the Haggards and got 50 groups sheets that different people had submitted. I got 80 group sheets on the Billingsley. When you get the number, you can order them on line yourself and view them at the local Family HIstory Center. Any way, send me a little more info and I’ll see what I can do. Good luck and good hunting. It has always been a theory or rather a conviction of mine that when our ancestors are ready to be found, a way opens up for us to find them. I have seen that happen in my years of research of my familiy.
sometimes I will wait for a long time and suddenly I’ll find sometimes five generations; sometimes less, but enough to keep me looking. One, for instance, I have searched for since 1986. He was a relative of mny husband named John Curtis Cheney. After about 20 years of looking and having wrong information given me by my spouse’s aunt, I found him first in the First Alabama Cavalry, which was a Union Cavalry, then I found his prisoner of war record and his and his two relatives mustering out and death records. Still no real reords proving who he was and where he came from. Then I found him later on the 1850 Marion County, Alabama Census. I started looking for his wife’s family, who were Chaneys. Then I looked for a few more years and found him in Hot Springs Arkansas, with his wife, baby son, his mother and a sister, with her two little girls. What he was doing there I don’t know. His baby boy was 6 1/2 months old and his name was Vinson. Then I found him a few weeks later in Ripley, Tippah County, MS, with his wife and baby boy. In the same community, I found another Vinson, 22 years of age, livig with a woman named Parmelia Cheney and athe sister who had been in Arkansas. I next found him nest on the 1870 census with Vinson and a houseful of little brothers, one of then being my husband’s granfather.

Sorry about the epistle, but I have very firm beliefs and some strong theories and experiences regarding our ancestors and I will be glad to help if I can. Just give me a little info and I’ll see what I can find. I have spent the last week helping two ladies from our church and I loved every second of it. Thank you for responding. I put this blog here at the instigation of my grandchildren to give them a historyu of their heritage, but to help others as well. Good Luck and good hunting.

Thanks so much for replying. For my Nancy Kirk born about 1778 maybe in Lancaster, SC, I have seen her father as John Kirk or John Kirk, Jr and her mother as Sarah Moore. John Kirk may have been born in VA. I have also seen
whereSarah and John were NC. She did marry Jeremiah Cureton abt 1798 in Lancaster. The Cureton’s came from Prince Geroge, VA. The children of Nancy and Jeremiah were named John, Sarah, Thomas KIrk, Elizabeth, William Jackson and Anna. There are so many maybes with Nancy’s parentage, but I am hopeful that the answers will show themselves as you said, when they are ready.

I have worked my way up to my 5th great grandfather John Kirk born June 8, 1745, Died Jan 15, 1818 but have many questions as to where he is from. From what I gathered, he sailed from Clones, Monaghan, Ireland to South Carolina, then began his life in Orange County North Carolina. John Kirk had 13 children: Parham, Lewis, Elizabeth, Daniel, Nancy, Stephen, Rebecca, George, Paulina “Polly”, Alexander C., Thomas Martin (My 4th great grandfather), James and John D. Not sure if all the names are accurate but get the same names in different trees on Ancestry. Donegal Ireland, Inver, Ireland and Perth, Perthshire, Scotland keep showing up in my search as well. If anyone has any information that they can share with me to help me with my search, I will be so grateful.
